Latin names all over: reading through the ingredients list of cosmetic products can be frustrating. Are the ingredients natural or not? Here is a tip: avoid the following ten products. They are very prominent in conventional cosmetics.

1.   Any ingredient featuring the word ‘parabene’

2.   Triclosan

3.   Any ingredient featuring the three capital letters ‘PEG’

4.   Paraffinum Liquidum

5.   EDTA

6.   Phenoxyethanol

7.   Chlorine

8.   Quaternium

9.   Any ingredient featuring the word ‘…propyl…’

10 . Methicone

You will never find any of the above in natural personal care products. Of course, there are many more substances that are not allowed. Avoiding the above is a good indication none the less.

This is already a great little list to start with. Would you know how the other certification bodies handle these? I know BDIH and Soil Association do not allow them. But Ecocert, or cosmo bio, or nature & progres, or the italian org ICEA? Thank you. Claudia/Zone Bébé

Most of these ingredients are banned by all the labels but there are some differences. In NATRUE's view it is important that they are totally banned. The latest draft of the proposed COSMOS standard, for example, allows up to 2% synthetic ingredients.
