The Scientific Committee of Consumer Safety (SCCS) of the European Commission adopted the final opinion on fragrance Allergens at the 15th Plenary Session on 26-27 July 2012 and it is published on 31st of July. In this opinion, allergenic potential of some components of fragrance materials as well as natural extracts to sensitive population were discussed.
NATRUE and its member companies are committed to ensure the safety of ingredients and finished natural and organic cosmetic products to consumers. Addressing this vital issue is a key priority for us.
While protecting the vulnerable population is very important, we believe that we need to communicate this sensitive issue in another way than suggested by the SCCS opinion so that it does not create a misleading image of natural fragrance substances and natural and organic cosmetic products. We also believe that proposed actions on new thresholds for substances should be more proportionate and based on more concrete scientific evidence as is available at this time. . In both cases, it is our view that the SCCS opinion cannot be translated into legislation and implemented as is.
For this reason, all stakeholders concerned must come together to find a solution to ensure the best possible protection for the vulnerable population/consumers whilst safeguarding the availability of premium natural fragrance materials which contribute significantly to consumer well-being at large. In this context NATRUE will continue to cooperate with the European Institutions, experts and other stakeholders and will actively seek involvement of all relevant stakeholders.
Should you need any more information, please do not hesitate to contact us. We warmly welcome everyone who wishes to work with us on this challenging issue.
