Eisenkraut ist ein sehr altes Heilmittel. So ist von den Römern überliefert, dass kein anderes Kraut mehr Ansehen genieße, als das heilige Eisenkraut „Verbenaca“. Die Verbene war schon damals für ihre entzündungshemmenden, adstringierenden, antibakteriellen und schmerzstillenden, krampflösenden sowie anregenden und tonisierenden Eigenschaften bekannt. So schreibt Plinius, ein römischer gelehrter (¯23-U75 n.Chr.) in der „Naturalis historia“ – also der Naturgeschichte: „Die Salbe vertreibe zudem auch Fieber und der Betroffene wird Freundschaft mit anderen Menschen erringen.“

La verveine est une plante médicinale très ancienne. Les Romains déclaraient qu’aucune herbe n’était plus belle que la verveine sacrée, la « Verbenaca ». La verveine était déjà connue pour ses propriétés anti-inflammatoires, astringentes, anti-bactériennes et analgésiques, tonifiantes, spasmolytiques et stimulantes. Voici ce qu’écrit Pline l’Ancien, érudit romain (23-79 après JC) dans sa « Naturalis Historia » (« L’Histoire naturelle ») : « L’onguent éloigne en outre la fièvre et le malade nouera des amitiés avec d’autres personnes. »
